Natural Stone Countertops is a new territory for many homeowners. Check out some of the frequently asked questions here to help answer some of the more common questions that arise.

Can You Cut on Granite Countertops?

Yes, you absolutely can. The average knife is made of steel and is unable to make a scratch in granite. As a mineral, granite can really only be marked up by another mineral such as sand or another piece of granite. As we said before, the average knife is made of steel, and will not make a mark on the granite. Really, you wouldn’t have to worry about cutting on your granite countertop unless you were using a knife made out of granite. Since knives are not typically made of granite or any other mineral, you could purchase a granite countertop color and feasibly not purchase another cutting board as long as you have your kitchen. A lot of people go this exact route, as a matter of fact.

How Durable is Granite?

So, how durable is granite? In a word: extremely. Granite is a naturally occurring stone and is one of the toughest rocks on the planet. One of the reasons why granite is so commonly chosen for kitchen countertops is because it is so durable. Of course, if you think about it, you realize that granite had better be durable. As one of the more expensive options for countertops, granite would be ineffectual if it couldn’t last a long time or was easily damaged. Ultimately, granite makes an excellent countertop because it is very durable material.

Can you set hot pans on granite or marble countertops?

Granite is ideal for kitchens because under normal conditions it will not burn and it will not be harmed by hot pans or open flames, but the stone will absorb heat from hot trays. Marble is not always ideal in kitchens as excessive heat can cause damage and potentially leave scars or burn marks.
